Did you know Richard the Lionheart love the wine of Cyprus so much he named it the king of wines?

Commandaria (also called Commanderia and Coumadarka) is an amber-coloured sweet dessert wine made in the Commandaria region of Cyprus on the foothills of the Troödos mountains. Commandaria is made from sun-dried grapes of the varieties Xynisteri and Mavro. While often a fortified wine, through its production method it often reaches high alcohol levels, around 15%, already before fortification. It represents an ancient wine style documented in Cyprus back to 800 BC and has the distinction of being the world's oldest named wine still in production, with the name Commandaria dating back to the crusades in the 12th century.

During the crusades, Commandaria was served at the 12th-century wedding of King Richard the Lionheart to Berengaria of Navarre, in the town of Limassol; it was during the wedding that King Richard pronounced Commandaria "the wine of kings and the king of wines".

Did you know there are beautiful mountain villages in Cyprus?

There are many beautiful villages in Cyprus but the most famous is surely the:

Lefkara

The name ‘Lefkara’ derives from the combination of Greek words ‘Lefka’, meaning white, and ‘Ori’, meaning hills, and indeed it is located on the idyllic and undulating southern slopes of the Troödos Mountains. The village is most famous for its production of top quality lace, and according to local legend even the famous Italian artist Leonardo da Vinci made a trip here to purchase a lace cloth in 1481. A main draw for tourists today are the groups of women who sit outside in the streets working diligently on fine embroidery. Other attractions within the village include a small Turkish delight factory and a folklore museum, an establishment which provides an enthralling glimpse at what life in Cyprus was like hundreds of years ago.

Did you know the most comfortable way to get around Cyprus is by car?

Visiting this wonderful country can be great fun because of its lush sceneries and rich culture. If you’re visiting the country as a tourist, you might find that getting around by public means is a bit tedious. This is why most tourists prefer to use car rental services. Using a rental car gives you the freedom to explore at your own leisure at a reasonable cost. While taking the train or a bus may seem cheaper, the convenience offered by a car for hire far outweighs its cost.

There is no better way to see the outstanding landscapes and the rolling country side of Isle of Venus than using a rental car. To hire a car in Cyprus you can use the services of car rental companies that offer the best and cheap car hire but before you hire the car ensure that:

  • You check the offering of the company and ensure that the car is well inspected and sustained well as to your pleasure.

  •  Enquire about the minimum rental period because the periods differ with the different companies.

  •  Ask about the fuel type and any delays likely to occur when collecting the car.

SINCE AT LEAST the time of the ancient Egyptians, cats have been cherished as companions, worshipped as idols, and kept as agents of pest control and good luck. But now French archaeologists have found evidence that our close relationship with cats may have begun much earlier.

Did you know bird observing is quite popular in Cyprus?

Cyprus is a must for bird watchers

Cyprus is a must-visit for birdwatchers as it lies on one of the major bird migration routes across the Mediterranean. With Africa to the south, Turkey and central Europe to the north and Syria and the Middle East to the east, Cyprus is a major staging post used twice a year as birds move between Africa, Europe and Euro-Asia.  Almost 200 species occur as regular passage migrants, while another 20 or so occur irregularly.

Spring is the best time for bird watching in Cyprus

Probably the best time to visit Cyprus for bird watching is in the spring when, in addition to the hordes of migrants in their readily identifiable breeding plumages one can also see the resident and summer breeding visitors.

Some 374 species can be seen in Cyprus – including accidental or vagrant species and those like Stonechat and Black Redstart, which are abundant winter visitors.

Spring migration starts very early, by the end of February Great Spotted Cuckoo are numerous and the first Isabelline Wheatear are passing through.

Did you know there are ATMs everywhere in Cyprus?

ATMs on Cyprus are most commonly found in banks, though they can also be found in some shops. They’re common in the tourist areas of Cyprus, but can also be found in smaller villages, as long as there’s a bank nearby. Some ATMs are located in swipe-to-open lobbies of banks for added security. It’s recommended to avoid these outside of the bank’s operating hours, as the slot near the door is a common target for card skimmers. Always try to use ATMs with security cameras nearby, as they’re less likely to be targeted by thieves.
