Did you know that there are rock solid ancient tombs in Cyprus?

The Tombs of the Kings are Paphos's main tourist attraction and an important reasons for the site's World Heritage listing.

Called "monumental" and "magnificent" by the UN, the 4th-century-BC resting places are carved from solid rock, complete with Doric pillars.

They're unique in Cyprus because of their peristyle court structure, influenced by Egyptian architecture.

In layman's terms, this means they were built like courtyards with colonnades and roofs. The ancient Egyptians believed the tombs of the dead should resemble the houses of the living.

Despite the name, no kings are actually buried here -- only members of high society. The tombs got their name because of their grand appearance.

Did you know the Roman mosaics in Cyprus are among the world's best?

Discovered by accident in 1962, Paphos's mosaics once decorated the houses of the island's most wealthy Roman colonists.

Described by the UN as "extremely rare and rank(ing) among the best examples in the world," they show great artistic skill but also tell compelling stories. The Four Seasons mosaic in the House of Dionysus (the god of wine) shows winter as a gray-haired old man warming himself up with a drop of vino.

Did you know there is a famous mosque in Cyprus which even non-muslims may enter?

This historic mosque is located 3km west of Larnaka on the road to Kiti, on the main Salt Lake. After the Arab armies successfully landed in Larnaka in 648AD, the Holy Helper and aunt of Mohamed - Umm Haram - died at the site when she fell off her mule. Grand Khalif Moavia, who was taking part in the expedition, immediately ordered the construction of a mosque on the spot. The mosque was first renovated in 1816, and most recently in 2002 by UNOPS, when archaeological excavations also revealed that the site has been inhabited since Neolithic times, with some archaeologists believing that the tomb is a monumental monolithic tomb of the prehistoric period. Today, the mosque is the main Muslim pilgrimage site of Cyprus, and stands as one of the most important holy places of worship for Muslims, ranked immediately after Mecca, Medina in Saudi Arabia and Al Aksha in Jerusalem.

Did you know there is only one horse-race track in Cyprus?

There is only one horserace track in the country, and it can be found in its capital city – Nicosia.

Horseracing was revived in Cyprus from the end of the 19th century. However, the tradition of the sport in this country, as evidenced by archaeological findings existing in the Cyprus Museum, is lost in the depth of the Hellenistic period, where we come across horseracing descriptions by Homer and other ancient authors. Horseracing in those days was actually a "sport of kings" who participated in them. When Kings of ancient Salamis of Cyprus died, their horses were buried with them. Horse racing is for the first time entered in the Olympic Games in the 7th century b.c.

Did you know you could enjoy Cyprus even during colder seasons?

So, should you visit Cyprus in winter?

In a word, ABSOLUTELY. If you’re looking for a beach holiday, you should probably head a little further afield at this time of year, but if you are a history and culture buff, a fan of discovering local towns and villages and hiking the cliff paths, or just in need of a peaceful break in a sunny climate, it’s the perfect time of year.

Plus, every winter there are tens of thousands of flamingos coming to overwinter on salt lakes. Pretty spectacular!

Located on the south-eastern edge of the city of Lefkosia (Nicosia), Athalassa National Forest Park has a total area of 840 hectares and is an oasis of greenery with many endemic, indigenous trees, shrubs and herbs. Athalassa was declared a National Forest Park in 1990, based on the provisions of the Forestry Legislation. In addition to its primary function as space and green lungs, the Park is offered for outdoor recreation activitied, physical exercise and environmental education and training. The Park is becoming increasingly important for the capital, mainly because of its geographical position – as it is easily accessible to the public- , but also because it is the largest free area of green areas in the wider region.

Geological samples, fossils and related objects are exhibited in a separate room, and visual material is used to present the local fauna and flora.

Its network of trails - covering 20 kilometres - makes it a popular place for cycling, walking and dog walking (on a designated pathway).

A park to walk, run or cycle. The best place for training in Nicosia. One gets the impression that they are in a forest. There is also a lake in the park something that makes Athalassa a very friendly destination for families with children.
