Did you know there are two national airports in Cyprus?

Larnaca international airport

Larnaca is the biggest airport in Cyprus. Both in terms of passengers and available destinations from Cyprus it significantly larger when compared to the airport in Paphos. The airport is located less than 5 kilometres outside of the coastal city Larnaca and is also close to other favourite tourist destinations such as Ayia Napa and Limassol. Larnaca airport is also the airport closest to the capital of Cyprus, Nicosia.

Larnaca airport was developed as a civilian airport in 1975 following the Turkish invasion of Cyprus and was upgraded with a new terminal building in 2009 with modern check in counters and departure gates.

Paphos International Airport

Outside the airport in Paphos

Paphos is the other international airport in Cyprus and is positioned on the Western Coast of Cyprus. It is significantly smaller than the airport in Larnaca and due to few scheduled routes there is a significant difference between arrivals and departures to and from Paphos airport when comparing holiday season numbers with the off season equivalent.

Did you know Cyprus is home of the oldest perfume bottle in the world?

We all know that perfumes, eau de toilette, eau de parfum, colognes, etc — all types of modern perfume contain natural or artificial aromatic substances. Most commonly, they are liquid alcohol-based solutions (ethanol), mixtures of alcohol and water, as well as dipropylene glycol and other liquids, and oils (coconut, jojoba). Perfume is a key part of a range of cosmetics: soaps, gels, creams, shampoos...

Currently, custom has it that perfumes for men and women have different concentrations and vary in terms of the longevity and intensity of the scent. Women's perfumes more commonly contain Eau Dr Parfum (EdP) and Perfume extract. In men's, it's the opposite: here you'll find Eau de Cologne (EdC concentrations), which carry and express lighter scents more clearly.

Very recently, historians found evidence that confirms Cyprus as the birthplace of perfume. Those of a romantic persuasion, the poetic souls among us are sure that Cyprus is the home of perfume thanks to more than just its abundance of aromatic plants and particular climatic conditions. There's no doubt that the people of Cyprus were inspired by the presence of the goddess of love and beauty herself, Aphrodite and thus had the idea of treating and beautifying themselves with fine perfumes.

Did you know Cyprus is the first in the world to include shape of itself on its flag?

The flag of the Republic of Cyprus was preceded by the flag of British Cyprus. Upon independence, Cyprus adopted a new flag, the design of which being created through a design competition in 1960. Under the constitution, the flag should not include either blue or red colours (the colours of the flag of Greece and the flag of Turkey), nor portray a cross or a crescent. All participants deliberately avoided use of these four elements in an attempt to make the flag "neutral".

The winning design was based on a proposal by İsmet Güney, a Turkish Cypriot art teacher. The design was chosen by Makarios III, the first President of the Republic, with the consent of Fazil Küçük, the first Vice-President.

Despite the attempt at a neutral design to promote unity amongst the constituent communities, this flag is most often used only by the Greek Cypriots, since it is associated by the Turkish Cypriots with the Greek-dominated Republic of Cyprus. Following the Turkish invasion of Cyprus and the establishment of the self-declared Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus, Turkish-Cypriots use the Flag of Northern Cyprus.

In the design of August 1960, the colour of the map is copper (Pantone 144-C). Both the crest and the two olive-tree leaves are olive green (Pantone 336-C). The background is white with the 3:5 ratio. In April 2006 the design was updated, the shape of the olive branches were slightly altered, its color was changed to Pantone 574, The copper color of the map was changed to Pantone 1385 and the ratio was changed to 3:2.

Flags produced on Cyprus often differ from the original specifications, both regarding the size of the map and the colours used. The government announced in October 2005, that it would take steps to "start from scratch" and assure that only flags complying with the official specifications would be produced.

Under the constitution of Cyprus, the flag of Cyprus may be flown by state institutions, public corporations, and citizens of the country.

Did you know there is a monastery which withstood many fires and still stands today in Cyprus?

The monastery of Panagia tou Kykkou, widely known as "Kykkos", is the most famous and richest in Cyprus and is located on the outskirts of the Troodos area, on a mountaintop at 1318 meters altitude, 15 km west of Pedoulas and Marathasa valley. The monastery is often condescendingly described by guidebooks, but will be able to tell you more about the Greek Cypriots and their religion today than all the venerable churches in Troodos combined. Add President Makarios Tomb and the nearby EOKA hideaways, and thus you have what you need in order to understand modern Cyprus.

The original monastery was established at the end of the eleventh century by the Byzantine emperor, although none of the original buildings have survived the many fires that have swept through the region. Nothing in today's monastery survived the last fire in 1831, although the famous icon of the Virgin Mary appears to have fared miraculously. It is dedicated to Panagia and possesses one of three icons attributed to Agios Loukas the Evangelist. The icon is silver plated and is in a shrine made of tortoise shell and mother of pearl that precedes iconostasis.

Kykkos monastery is the richest on the island, and it shows in many ways. The buildings are immaculately maintained, murals vivid and bright, and the monks many. The wealth grew, partly because of the icon's appeal, and partly because many people donated their money to the church during Ottoman times, instead of seeing values lost due to heavy Ottoman taxes.

The first president of the Republic of Cyprus, Archbishop Makarios III, served here as a novice. At his own request, he was buried on top of Throni, three kilometers west of the monastery, and not far from the village where he grew up, Panayia. The monastery produces zivania (liquor) and a selection of other alcoholic beverages, and organizes religious fairs on September 8 (Virgin´s birth) and 15 August (Virgin's death).

Did you know that Cyprus belongs among the safest places in the world?

Cyprus is known to be a relatively safe place to live in. Below you will learn about police presence and the general situation regarding crimes in Cyprus.

Cyprus is known as a safe place in which to live. Despite past violence and the consequent division of the country to northern Turkish and southern Greek Cypriot regions, statistics for the Republic of Cyprus point to a crime rate that is lower than that of most other western European countries. In North Cyprus crime is relatively low but normal precautions should always be taken. Children and the elderly can walk the streets alone or at night and the environment is a warm, welcoming one. However, cars and properties in North Cyprus should always be left secured.
