Did you know the national symbol of Cyprus is a very shy sheep?

It's the national symbol, but you may never see it.

Cyprus' mouflon is one shy sheep. It was once considered vermin, so you can't entirely blame hunters for its demise. By the 1930s, there were only 15 mouflon, technically a subspecies of wild sheep, left on the island.

But conservation programs mean there are now thousands -- somewhere. A couple of small herds are kept under protection.

One is at Stavros tis Psorkas on the west side of the Troodos mountains -- but, even here, the animals keep a low profile.

Did you know Cyprus offers many great opportunities for lovers of climbing?

Rock climbing in Cyprus is more varied than many of the other areas around the Mediterranean. Unusually, there is a greater quantity of recorded traditional routes than sports, and the rock type is more complex than simply limestone.

The main areas in terms of current routes are: Cavo Greko - located in the far south east corner of the island and consisting of outrageously featured soft limestone offering predominately trad climbing, Dhiarizos - a hard limestone area located between Limassol and Pafos offering the best sports routes on the island, and Droushia/Ineia which has a wealth of both sports and trad with a healthy dose of bouldering thrown in. The Droushia/Ineia rock is a form of sandstone (thought to be metamorphized). Other rock areas and types and exist and can be found by visiting the main Areas section.

The Cyprus climate is amongst the best in Europe and offers an all year round experience, with the optimum times to visit being spring and autumn. Combine this with its varied and numerous resort possibilities then it makes a good choice as a climbing holiday location, especially if the party includes non climbing members.

Did you know there are wonderful beach bars in Cyprus?

1. Aplostra Restaurant Beach Bar, Lady’s Mile, Limassol

A cool kid on the block that opened its doors last year on the popular Ladies Mile stretch, Aplostra is the perfect place to be if you’re keen on avoiding the hustle and bustle of the main Limassol seafront strip where most of the town’s other hip and happening bars tend to be located.

Enter the stone built place and you’ll be dying to kick back in the cool interior, characterised by wooden and wicker décor and furnishings. Sit here for a bite to eat and you’ll get to indulge in a selection of meals with some great fish dishes on offer and some fantastic salads – something that the establishment takes particular pride in.

2. Sea You Beach Bar, Paphos

Some gravitate towards this bar to sip on their signature mojitos, others can’t wait to kick back and watch the sunset at this idyllic spot. Whatever your reason for heading here, Sea You Beach Bar is hands down one of the coolest beach bars in Paphos to head to let your hair down this summer.

Located on Kissonerga’s Potima beach, the whole place has been given a serious upgrade, with beach beds to kick back on and plenty of space to enjoy beachside lazing. What we really love about Sea You Beach Bar is that there is plenty of shade to hide away from the sun’s glare on super hot days, with tables and chair dotted across a fabulous grassy patch and straw umbrellas down by the beach giving the place a really exotic feel.

3. Kaliva on the Beach, Ayia Napa

Want to enjoy the golden sands and turquoise beaches of Ayia Napa but don’t fancy being stuck in a tourist trap? Then head to Kaliva on the Beach; a lovely place with great ambiance that opened its doors last year on Pantohou Beach right by the Ayia Napa harbour, offering a hip alternative to many of your run-of-the-mill Ayia Napa establishments.

Kick back on the relaxing sun beds and enjoy the great vibe with chill out music in the background. And when the hunger pangs kick in, there are plenty of foodie delights to devour, whether you fancy a fishy treat, salad or fruit platter to share. Bon appetit!

Did you know Cyprus is the holy land of all photographers?

Cyprus is an awesome place for taking photos. Some of the most photogenic places are:

1.    Aphrodite’s Rock
If any one spot on the island tops the list, it absolutely has to be this one. Legend has it that Aphrodite, Ancient Greek Goddess of Love and Beauty, once rose from the frothy seas surrounding this rock, a destination that has now become the most mythical and one of the most famous on the island.

2.    Nissi Beach
Powdery golden sands meet iridescent turquoise waters: this beach really is what dreams are made of…especially if you manage to get there before the summer crowds descend on this extremely popular Ayia Napa stretch!

3.    Larnaca Salt Lake
Oh yes, images of the Larnaca Salt Lake are everywhere.  A big attraction for a reason, countless people flock to the area to take some captivating snaps of the shimmering waters, especially when the gorgeous migratory pink flamingos arrive between the wetter months of November and March.

4.    Cape Greco Natural ‘Rock Bridge’
The whole of the Cape Greco National park is rather inspirational, but this particular spot is really popular with photographers and has become quite a hit with newlyweds too, who head to the location for romantic pictures (often with their wedding gear on), especially at sunset.

5.    Curium Amphitheatre
Perched on a brilliant spot high on a clifftop outside Limassol, this breath-taking site commands tremendous views of the sea as photographers take out their camera for panoramic shots of the patchwork land that meets the open seas.

6.   Tzelefos Bridge
A Venetian stone bridge deep in the Paphos Forest that elegantly arches over the gurgling Diarizos River, this really is an impressive site if ever there was one, from whatever angle you look at it!

7.    Akamas
From white sandy bays and deep blue waters, to valleys, gorges and herds of lonesome goats, this truly pictorial spot is rightly hailed an absolute nature lover’s haven!

8.    Famagusta Gate

A glorious sandstone gate which once led into the old city, it stands as the largest and most imposing of the three gates of the Venetian Walls which surround the old city of Nicosia – built between 1567 and 1570 by the ruling Venetians – and designed by the famous engineer, Giulio Savorgano.

9.   Lefkara village
Renowned for its gorgeous architecture, well known for its lacemaking and silver making traditions and reputedly once visited by Leonardo da Vinci, it’s hardly surprising that locals and foreigners alike flock to this place to take gorgeous shots of the colourful cobbled winding village lanes.

10.     Troodos peaks
Rising proud above the island’s flatland, popular pictures of endless greenery and glistening mountain peaks come winter, form a stark antithesis to the typical beachy shots that grace the covers of many tourist brochures.

Did you know that world’s oldest water wells can be found in Cyprus?

Some of the world’s oldest water wells can be found in Cyprus.

The group of water wells found in western Cyprus are believed to be among the oldest in the world. In fact, radiocarbon dating indicates the wells are 9,000 to 10,500 years old, placing them in the Stone Age.

In 2009, a team from Edinburgh University found six such wells, at Kissonerga, near the coastal town of Paphos. The wells are said to show the sophistication of early settlers of the Neolithic period.

Neolithic water well, Kissonerga, Pafos, 2009

According to Thomas Davis, director of the Nicosia-based Cyprus American Archaeological Research Institute, “the fact that they were using wells and that they tapped into the island’s water table shows heightened appreciation for the environment”.

The cylindrical shaft discovered by the excavator had a number of small niches cut out of its sides to enable those who dug the well to climb in and out. It was silted up, containing animal bones and the poorly preserved skeleton of a young woman.
